By | 2009-12-11T00:00:00+00:00 December 11th, 2009|Artist Pieces, Events|

We want to say farewell to "Tabi Tabi Po" in style.  Join us this Saturday, December 12th, for this incredible show's closing reception from 6-9pm.  Baliktad, a two man team made up of Pu22le (aka Alex Abalos) and Mike Boo (a turntablist not only known in the Bay but around the world), will be filling the gallery with their music.  They will be spinning and playing sounds incorporating break beats, traditional Filipino instruments and city noises. Visit our previous post, "Animating Tabi Tabi Po", for a sampling of their music. [...]

WHO ARE THE “TABI TABI PO” CREATURES?

By | 2009-11-28T00:00:00+00:00 November 28th, 2009|Artist Pieces|

Who are these creatures that are haunting our walls right now?  They are the characters of Filipino folklore and also, the reasons for many unexplainable, sometimes scary and sometimes enlightening, incidents.  One of the most interesting part of the show is how different the “Tabi Tabi Po” artists have interpreted these mythical beings onto their canvases. Read more about these creatures below and if you have not had a chance to check out the show in person, make sure you come by the gallery before December 12th.  It truly is an exhibit [...]

Typhoon Ondoy, known as Ketsana to others, dumped more than a month’s worth of average rainfall on Manila and surrounding areas in one 24-hour period on September 26th 2009.  About 80 percent of the city, with a population of 15 million, was under water.  More than 2 million people were impacted. RECAP OF TABI TABI PO OPENING

By | 2009-11-17T00:00:00+00:00 November 17th, 2009|Opening Receptions|

The vibe was positive, the art was dope, and a lot of artists were on hand to answer questions about their art. The best part of the night was the people in attendance. They were inquisitive and genuinely wanted to learn more about the Filipino culture. Also, another high point in the evening was seeing James "gaNyan" Garcia be able to relax and enjoy his time with his friends after a long week of building and setting up for the show. Cheers to James for making this happen! (Lifting my imaginary shot [...]

WHAT DOES “TABI TABI PO” MEAN?

By | 2009-11-11T00:00:00+00:00 November 11th, 2009|Opening Receptions|

Our next exhibition, opening this Friday, November 13th,  is an exploration of Filipino folklore creatures by urban, contemporary, Filipino artists.  When we tell people that the show is titled "Tabi Tabi Po", the immediate question is "What does that mean?" Tabi Tabi Po (pronounced Ta-bee Ta-bee Poe) refers to Filipino superstitions- particularly when someone is entering a locale where ghosts and goblins may be living.  It is a way of saying "excuse me" or "pardon me" when entering or passing a territory where these creatures inhabit for fear there will be unforgiving [...]

Street Art and Social Change: INO Paints “Instability” in Ukraine

By | 2016-08-03T00:00:00+00:00 August 3rd, 2016|Political, Social Change, Street Art|

Greek master of design and meaning, INO, just finished his largest wall to date in Kiev, Ukraine. The piece is entitled "Instability" and depicts a ballerina dancing on a spherical bomb. The artist is known for his powerful and highly provocative imagery, which almost always has a social or political edge to it. Standing at 48m high, this piece was painted in context with Ukraine's recent political instability. INO is adding to the narrative of humanity's apparent inability to grow toward a more harmonious living. Check out the images and a aerial video of the [...]

COMMUNITY SERIES #1: YOUNG UPSTARTS

By | 2009-12-30T00:00:00+00:00 December 30th, 2009|Community|

As the year of 2009 is coming to a close, we wanted to take the time out and recognize some of the inspirational people and organizations we have met in our community.  When we started 1:AM gallery a year ago, we had a vision of creating it to be a one-stop-shop for all your urban arts needs, by offering paint, books, classes and artwork.  What we did not know was how it was going to evolve to be a meeting place for the community, where people come in and freely express their [...]
